How Parentline Can Help You

There is no one rule book for parenting!

Everyone’s life circumstances are different.

At times family life can be moving along well. At other times there may be challenges which push you and your child to your limits.

During these challenging times it’s important to reach out for support and we’re here to help.

How talking to a Parentline counsellor can help

Our trained counsellors can assist you to:

  • Identify your immediate concerns as a parent
  • Tune in to your needs right now as a parent (as well as your child’s needs)
  • Help you to develop strategies for managing those issues
  • Gain a better understanding of the way your family works
  • Work out your strategies for making meaningful change
  • Get information and resources about children and parenting
  • Increase your parenting confidence and ability to care for your child
  • Recognise and develop your own skills and strengths
  • Access individually paced over-the-phone parenting skills training
  • Increase your capacity to cope
  • Improve your child-parent relationship

What happens when you call?

Deciding to talk to someone about your family can be a big step. When you do...

You can request an Interpreter

You can ask for a male or female counsellor

Counselling can be done via phone or WebChat 

You can speak with the same counsellor for ongoing support

Your strengths will be recognised, with respect and understanding 

Counselling is confidential unless you or someone else is at risk of harm

You can call if you’re a parent, step parent, grandparent, guardian or carer

You will be asked what you want to talk about and what you most need from the call

Who will you be talking to?

Your call will be answered by one of our trained counsellors

  • Our counsellors are all tertiary qualified, paid professionals who receive additional specialised training in parenting skills development
  • All Parentline counsellors are also trained Kids Helpline counsellors, giving them wide exposure and a unique understanding of the issues that young people face
  • We have specially trained counsellors who can offer phone-based Triple P (Positive Parenting Program) support to develop skills, strategies and confidence to handle any parenting situation

  • Discuss any issues that impact on your parenting and relationship with your child
  • Offer a supportive conversation that’s confidential and safe
  • Listen and work with you to provide support and guidance
  • Promote and contribute to the resilience and wellbeing of your family
  • Assist you with developing strategies for positive parenting and personal coping
  • Link your family with local community resources and services

Other support services

While Parentline is for parents, grandparents and carers living in Queensland and the Northern Territory, there are services for people living outside of these jurisdictions.
