COUNSELLING AT PARENTLINE
How we help
Reaching out and getting help
Parenting is tough. But you don't have to do it alone.
When things become challenging, it’s important to know that you can always talk to someone about what’s going on.
If you’re a parent, carer or family member living in Queensland or the Northern Territory, you can call Parentline from 8am–10pm, seven days a week - for the cost of a local phone call.
How Parentline works
You can contact Parentline via phone or WebChat.
Phone counselling is the fastest way to get support and start talking. Call us on 1300 30 1300.
WebChat counselling is a great alternative to phone counselling if you prefer writing to talking.
Our counsellors will listen without judgement
We understand it can be daunting speaking to a counsellor for the first time!
Remember, we’re here to listen and not judge. Parentline is a confidential service and you can choose what you want to talk to us about. You can provide your name if you feel comfortable, but you don’t have to.
When you contact us our counsellors will:
- Listen carefully to your concerns or problems
- Ask questions to get a better understanding of what’s happening for you
- Work with you to provide support and guidance
- Help you to sort out those issues that are most important to you
- Help you develop strategies for managing those issues
Our approach
Counselling is about understanding the situation or issue from your point of view, helping you to think about problems in new ways and helping you come up with strategies and solutions that may improve the situation.
Sometimes, it can take more than one counselling session to get things improving or moving in the right direction.
Often problems are complex and there are many things the counsellor needs to understand about your particular situation before helping you find solutions.
Sometimes you may just need somebody to listen who is outside the situation and won’t judge you or your parenting.
We can be there for you and support you during difficult times - even when things look like they may never get better.
It can help to have a goal in mind that you want to work through together. If you’re unsure, the counsellor can work with you to figure out what you want and what is most important to you and your family.
